Udo Jingu Shrine

Art & Architecture Beautiful Scenery Culture Experience History Insta-worthy Outdoor Activities

Set in a cave aside a cliff gazing over a spectacular view of the ocean, the vividly painted Udo Shrine hides. Sited on the Nichinan Coast south of Miyazaki City, this shrine venerates the mythical first Emperor of Japan; Emperor Jimmu and is also said to be the mythical birthplace of his father Ugayafukiaezu too.

Drinking the water from the breast shaped rocks is believed to be nourishing for women who are pregnant, in labor, and those praying to have a child. The Shrine is also visited by couples and newlyweds, hoping to bring them good fortune in their future together. Down below the terrace of the shrine you will notice a giant rope forming a target atop a rock. Visitors throw small ceramic undama (lucky balls) at the target; and if they manage to get the undama into the small pool of water in the center of the rock, it is said that good luck will be upon them.
