Zenkokuji Temple is located in the middle of the Kagurazaka area of Tokyo. It was originally built in the present-day Chiyoda Ward in 1595 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, but after suffering damage from repeated fires, it was moved to and rebuilt in its current location.
The temple is a popular sightseeing symbol of Kagurazaka, known for its bright-red gate and two tiger statues situated in front of the main hall. Also housed in the temple is a statue of Bishamonten (one of the Seven Lucky Gods), which is worshiped as a bringer of good luck and prosperous business.
The Kagurazaka Festival is held each year at the end of July, during which time the area bustles with traditional dances and other festivities. During the festival, Zenkokuji Temple offers limited-time omamori lucky charms that can’t be purchased at any other time. It is also said that this was the first place in Tokyo for night stalls to operate during temple festivals.
