The Akita Museum of Modern Art is a prefectural art museum located within the "Akita Furusato-mura" theme park. One of the museum's unique characteristics is the building itself which appears almost as if it is floating at the top of a hill. Inside are vast collections and exhibits of fine artwork, spanning from western style "Akita ranga" works painted by Akita lords and vassals during the middle to late Edo period all the way to modern and present-day pieces.
In addition to the Akita-related artist collection exhibition, special exhibitions introducing many different types of artwork and an exhibit of sculptural works from both inside and outside Japan, the museum features a high-resolution gallery introducing masterpieces from around the world as well as works stored in-house. 2018 featured an exhibition by teamLab. The area outside the museum can also be enjoyed, with an outdoor "art zone" featuring many sculptures.
Furthermore, in our aim to be an art museum which anybody can comfortably visit, we proactively carry out projects such as museum lectures and many types of art classes. Our classrooms include spaces where even small children can enjoy art, allowing entire families to participate. Outside the museum is a large facility featuring various experience centers, attractions, and restaurants, making it a wonderful place for family getaways. Spending a half to full day looking through the various attractions at a relaxed pace is one great way to enjoy the area.
