Kuroshio no Mori Mangrove Park rests in Sumiyo village, about 90% of which is covered by deep forest. It is home to protected species, and the mangrove forest that spreads out from the estuary at Sumiyo Bay is composed of two types of plants. The scope of the forest is the second largest in Japan next to Okinawa Prefecture's Iriomotejima Island. The valuable fish ryukyuayu that is said to be extinct in Okinawa still inhabits this area, and at low tide crabs moving in large groups can also be seen. Inside the park there are an abundance of courses that will ensure a fulfilling trip to Amami, including ground golf, canoeing, and segway tours with a local guide. At the restaurants, make sure to taste yellowfin tuna caught daily in the nearby ocean, tuna and rice don dishes made with homemade sauce, and local chicken dish keihan.
