Matsumaejo Castle (Fukuyamajo Castle)

Art & Architecture Culture Experience History

Matsumaejo Castle, also known as Fukuyamajo Castle, faces the sea on the southern tip of Hokkaido. It was used to protect the island against foreign ships in the 19th century, and it was designated as a national treasure in 1941. The castle survived through the turbulence and wars of the modern period, but it unfortunately burned down in 1949. The castle tower currently standing is a reconstruction built in 1961, and the current Honmaru Gate has been designated as an Important Cultural Property. In addition, the park in front of the castle is famous as a spot for hanami cherry blossom viewing in spring.
