Tojinhaka Tomb, located on Ishigakijima Island in Okinawa, was built as a memorial for the the untimely deaths of the people involved in the Robert Browne Incident. In 1852, the Chinese people who had been mistreated aboard the slave ship Robert Browne, which was en route from China to the US, held a revolt. They killed the ship's captain and some of the crew and eventually landed at Ishigakijima Island. After arriving at the island, the Chinese people lived in detention facilities, but when dispatched English military personnel heard of the incident, the detention facilities were attacked and searched, and many of the Chinese people were captured or killed. Tojinhaka Tomb is in place to mourn both the people who died during the Robert Browne Incident as well as those who escaped capture but died of illness and could not return to their home countries. The exterior of Tojinhaka Tomb is gaudy, but the sad history of the place is inscribed at the main entrance.
