Tsumekizaki Cape, located at the southeastern tip of the Suzaki Hanto Peninsula in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is one of the best places of scenic beauty in the whole prefecture. From here, visitors can gaze out at the perfectly clear blue seascape spreading out ahead of a chalk-white lighthouse. The coast on the west side of the cape has an accumulation of rocks shaped like pillars called Tawaraiso, which is a particularly strange and popular spectacle. Designated by Shizuoka Prefecture as a cultural property, Tawaraiso was created around five million years ago when volcanic lava cooled and hardened.
A variety of plants can be also seen all over the cape throughout all four seasons; in particular, the sweet scent of over three million daffodils floats through the air during winter. Every year from December 20 through February 10, the Daffodil Festival is held, at which local cuisine is made and Shimoda Taiko live performances are held.
