Maruoka Castle is one of only twelve still existing ancient castle keeps in Japan. Among these, it is also considered to have been built in the oldest persevering construction style. That is why it has been registered as an important cultural property. The castle is a popular spot to visit, especially during the cherry-blossom season, and it is considered one of the 100 best spots for cherry-blossom viewing. Inside the castle’s gardens there are 400 cherry trees of the Somei Yoshino variety and, every April, a cherry blossom festival is held.
