Mashuko Lake

Beautiful Scenery

In the Ainu language, Mashuko Lake is called "Kamuito." It's a place of mystery, known as the "lake of the gods." From the top of one of the observation platforms, the enveloping deep blue water of the lake spreads out beneath, and depending on the movement of the clouds, the view changes from moment to moment. The mystery and beauty of this lake has been attracting people for centuries, and in order to preserve the nature found there, Mashuko Lake and its surrounding vicinity has become a specially preserved district even among national parks.
Entrance is restricted in order to conserve the environment, so to enjoy Mashuko Lake, it's best to go to one of the observation platforms. Mashuko Lake has three observation platforms, and the most popular is the Mashu First Observation Platform (entrance fee required). There is a rest house here, as well as souvenirs for sale. Kamuishu Island can be seen from the Mashu Third Observation Platform, and all the way to the opposite side of the lake can be seen from the hideaway Uramashu Observation Platform. From each of these three observation platforms, a different and unique expression of the lake can be experienced. If time allows, we highly recommend going around to visit all three. Mashu First Observation Platform and Mashu Third Observation Platform are both accessible by car, but there is also a walkway between the two. While walking, visitors are sure to feel the ever-changing expressions of the lake and the winds that blow in from Kussharo and Shibecha. In order to feel the allure of Mashuko Lake even more deeply, we recommend visiting the observations platforms on foot.
