The Ashigara Service Area (Aichi-Bound) is one of the largest service areas in all of Japan. However, this is no ordinary rest area. With several places to observe Mount Fuji, and even a famous open air bath, the Ashigara SA is a bona fide leisure spot. There's a foot bath cafe, the mysterious "doctor fish," and towels can be rented at charge, so you can come empty-handed if you'd like. There's also Gelato Cheese Yogurt, which uses local Asagiri Plateau milk, and local gourmet such as Wappa Meshi. "Wappa" is a traditional Japanese bento box made with thin slices of cedar wood, and contains rice along with tuna, whitebait, and other delicious local Shizuoka Prefecture ingredients.
