Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway is a rarity in Japan, as it includes a midway station before reaching the mountain summit. As the ropeway cars close in on the summit of Mt. Daishisan, the splendid scenery of the gentle flowing of Maruyamagawa River and the Sea of Japan just ahead spreads out just below. As you climb ropeway from the departure station to the Onsenji Station to the Summit Station, there are sightseeing spots to enjoy at each station. Additionally, each station building is certified as a registered tangible cultural property of the country, so make sure to take a look at the design.
At the midway station, Onsenji Station, you can visit the Onsenji Temple and relax in the quiet. From the observation deck at the top of the mountain, the onsen town and Sea of Japan are visible, of course, and on clear days visitors will be able to see as far as the Tango Hanto Peninsula. You can also take a visit to the Okunoin Temple and Daishido Temple and try your hand at "kawarake nage," or "plate throwing," a game in which you throw earthenware plate at a high-up hoop. It is said that if you throw the earthenware from the summit, you'll receive the blessings of the mountain.
When you return to the base of the mountain, drop in to shops that sell gelato and onsen eggs or Kusushi Pocket Park. There are also footbaths available for taking a short break. The base of the ropeway is an onsen town surrounded by plenty of nature, and the coloring changes with the seasons: fresh green, autumn red, and snow white, a different kind of beauty can be found here at different times of year.
