Zuiryuji Temple is a temple of the Zen Buddhism school in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture. It is also known as Takaokasan, which is actually the name written on the famous Sanmon gate that serves as an entrance to the temple. The temple was founded in the 17th century, and its buildings are prime examples of Edo period (1600-1868) Buddhist architecture while also pulling inspiration from the great temples of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). In fact, the temple buildings have been designated as national treasures of Japan.
During special events and particular seasons, Zuiryuji Temple stays open late into the night and is outfitted with colorful illuminations that transform majestic temple grounds into a mystical space. There are also moving light projections displayed on the walls which incorporate Japanese and Zen Buddhist symbols.
